There's No Single UK Credit Score

Unlike some countries, the UK doesn't have one universal credit score. Instead, three main credit reference agencies — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion — each maintain their own credit file and scoring model, which can give you a different number from each one.

How Lenders Use Your Credit File

Most UK lenders pull data from at least one of these agencies (some check more than one) and weigh the underlying information rather than relying solely on the agency's own score — so the same applicant can see different scores across agencies while lenders still reach broadly similar decisions.

What Affects Your Credit File?

Payment history, existing debt levels, length of credit history, and whether you're registered on the electoral roll all commonly factor into your credit file.

Building Credit History From Scratch

For those new to the UK or with a thin credit file, a credit-builder credit card or being added as an authorized user on someone else's account are commonly used ways to start building UK credit history.
